What are the twelve colours on a colour wheel?
Three tiers, built by mixing. The primaries cannot be made from anything else, the secondaries come from mixing two primaries, and the tertiaries come from mixing a primary with the secondary beside it:

Every hue sits 30 degrees from its neighbours, since twelve equal steps divide a circle evenly. That regular spacing is the entire reason the wheel is drawn as a wheel rather than as a list, and it is what makes a spun result meaningful rather than arbitrary.
Tertiary naming follows a fixed convention: the primary is always spoken first. Red-orange, never orange-red. Getting the order backwards is the usual giveaway that someone learned the palette from a paint set rather than from the wheel.
Why this wheel uses red, yellow, and blue
Because it describes paint, not light. The RYB model is a pigment model, built on how physical colourants behave when mixed, and mixing pigments removes light rather than adding it. Combine enough and you approach a muddy dark rather than anything bright.
Screens work the opposite way, which is where most confusion about primaries comes from. Anything printed, painted, or dyed follows the subtractive logic this wheel describes. Isaac Newton produced the first circular colour diagram in the 1660s after splitting white light with a prism, and joining the spectrum into a ring was his innovation. The wheel artists use today descends from that arrangement by way of two centuries of revision.
Warm and cool halves
Draw a line through the ring and the twelve split evenly into six warm and six cool. Reds, oranges, and yellows on one side; greens, blues, and violets on the other.
The division does real work in a painting. Warm hues appear to advance toward a viewer and cool hues appear to recede, so temperature carries depth even in a flat image with no perspective drawn into it. A spun colour that feels wrong for a subject is often right at the wrong temperature, and shifting a red toward orange or toward violet changes the mood more than changing the subject would.
Using the 12 Colors Wheel for practice
Restriction produces better work than freedom does, and a twelve-hue wheel is a good source of restriction. Spin two hues and build an entire piece from those plus black and white. Spin one and make it dominate everything else on the page.
