Anime is the odd one out

Nine entries name a genre. Anime names a medium. Action, Comedy, Horror, Sci-Fi, and the rest describe what a film is about or how it makes you feel. Anime describes how it was made and where.

That overlap causes real friction during use. An anime film can also be Action, Fantasy, Horror, or Romance, so a spin landing on Fantasy could reasonably be satisfied by an anime title, and a spin landing on Anime does not narrow anything down. Groups that want a clean decision should settle what Anime means for them before the first spin, either as a strict category that excludes anime from the other nine, or as a wildcard that simply means animated. Groups that would rather avoid the question entirely can drop the entry and spin among nine.

Documentary changes what the wheel is asking

The other nine entries mostly describe fiction. Documentary does not. Landing on it shifts the evening from a story to a subject, and for some groups that is a much bigger ask than switching from Comedy to Horror.

It is also the entry most likely to get rerolled. Anyone who has run a decision wheel with a group knows one option always gets challenged, and on a movie night list it is usually the one nobody was in the mood for. The fix is deciding in advance whether rerolls are allowed at all. If they are not, Documentary stays and occasionally wins. If the group knows it will never actually watch one, removing the entry is more honest than keeping it as decoration.

Ten slices give clean, equal odds

An even ten divides the circle neatly, and every genre gets the same wedge and the same chance. Nothing is weighted toward the popular options, so Action and Documentary are treated identically.

That is adjustable. Adding a genre a second time gives it a second slice and a larger share of the outcomes, which suits a group that genuinely leans toward comedies but still wants some randomness. Cutting the list down works the same way in reverse. A group of four might each remove one genre they refuse to watch, leaving six that everyone has already agreed to, and spin among those. The wheel redraws as soon as the entry text changes, so the list can be trimmed while people are still arguing about it.

Genres are broad, so pair the wheel with a second step

Landing on Western tells you the type of film but not the film. That gap is the main limit of a genre wheel, and it is worth planning for rather than discovering at 9pm.

The usual approach is two stages. Spin once for the genre, then let one person pick a title inside it, or open a streaming app and take the first thing in that category that nobody has seen. Another option is to replace the genre list entirely once the group knows its tastes, pasting in ten actual movie titles instead. The panel accepts whatever list gets pasted in, and a title wheel gives an answer that needs no second step.

Sharing it before movie night

Spinning is one click of the center SPIN button, and one click gives one result. The setup work happens earlier, in deciding which ten genres belong on the wheel for the group that will actually use it.

Because the whole list travels as a single link, one person can build the version their group agreed on and send it out ahead of time. Nobody retypes ten entries on a phone. A regular movie night can keep the same link and adjust it over time, dropping genres that never get picked and adding ones the group keeps drifting toward anyway.
