A flat distribution is not a population
Real populations are shaped, and the shape differs sharply by country. A flat wheel gives a 5-year-old and a 68-year-old identical odds, which no demographic pyramid does:

That gap is useful rather than a flaw. A flat spin is exactly what you want when the goal is to break your own habits, and exactly what you do not want when the goal is realistic demographics. Weights convert one into the other: giving ages 20 to 45 a weight of 3 and the extremes a weight of 1 approximates a working-age-heavy population without deleting anyone.
Writers cluster, and the wheel exposes it
Look at any cast you have written and count the ages. Most fiction concentrates hard in the twenties and thirties, with children present as plot devices and older characters as mentors or obstacles rather than protagonists.
The clustering is rarely deliberate. It happens because a writer defaults to the age they find easiest to inhabit, and the supporting cast arranges itself around that. A spin returning 61 or 8 forces a character who does not fit the pattern, and the question of what that person wants is genuinely harder to answer, which is the point.
Ages carry structural information too. A character's age fixes what historical events they lived through, what technology they grew up with, what stage of career or education they are at, and who could plausibly be their parent or child. Spinning an age before deciding anything else means those constraints arrive first and the character is built to fit them.
Age gaps and generations
The wheel is more useful spun twice than once. Two spins give you a relationship, and the gap between them tells you what kind.
A 25-year gap is roughly a generation, so those two could be parent and child. A 5-year gap between adults is peers; the same gap between a 10-year-old and a 15-year-old is enormous. A 40-year gap crosses two generations and usually means grandparent, or a mentor relationship with real distance in it.

The same setup demonstrates sampling. Twenty spins from a uniform 1-to-70 range will not look perfectly even, and the lumpiness is what small samples do. That is a more convincing demonstration than any explanation, since the students generated the data themselves.
