Age Wheel (10 to 40)
Thirty-one years, from the last of childhood to the middle of a career. SpinyWheel's Age Wheel (10 to 40) spins each at 3.2 percent, covering the band most fiction actually uses, for character creation, writing prompts, and design work.
The range crosses one hard line
Most of what changes between 10 and 40 is gradual. One thing is not:
| Band | Ages |
|---|---|
| Entries | Chance |
| Minor | 10 to 17 |
| 8 | 25.8% |
| Adult | 18 to 40 |
| 23 | 74.2% |
Roughly a quarter of spins return a minor, and that is a different kind of character rather than a younger version of the same one. A 15-year-old and a 25-year-old differ in what they legally can do, who has authority over them, where they spend their days, and what a story can reasonably ask of them.
Deciding in advance whether your project wants an adult cast matters more than any other constraint on this wheel. If it does, trim to 18 and above and every remaining entry carries 4.3 percent instead of 3.2. If a mixed cast is the point, leave it and let the wheel produce the range.
What actually changes across three decades
Ten to forty covers more transitions than any other thirty-year stretch of a life, which is why it is the band fiction leans on:
School occupies the first eight or nine years of the range and structures everything, including who a character sees daily and what they are measured against. The late teens and early twenties bring the first stretch where nobody is required to know where you are, which is a bigger shift than any birthday.
The twenties are usually about instability by design: work, housing, and relationships all provisional. Somewhere in the thirties most of that settles into something, and the character's problem changes from finding a direction to living with the one they picked.
A spun number tells you which of those a character is in the middle of, and that is usually enough to know what they want before you have decided anything else about them.
Peers, gaps, and the ten-year problem
Two spins give you a relationship, and this range makes the gaps unusually legible.
Two ages within about three years are peers regardless of where in the range they fall. A ten-year gap between a 12-year-old and a 22-year-old is nearly unbridgeable; the same gap between 28 and 38 is barely worth noting. That asymmetry is the most useful thing about spinning two ages here rather than one.
The wide gaps are the interesting ones. A 14 and a 34 in the same scene is a teacher, a parent, an older sibling, or something a story would have to explain, and having to explain it is where the writing usually starts.
SpinyWheel's Dual Wheel returns two results in one landing, so both ages arrive together rather than the second being adjusted to suit the first. Thirty-one entries against thirty-one give 961 ordered pairs.
Building a cast without clustering
Spin once per character rather than picking ages after the cast exists. Ages chosen retroactively cluster hard, because a writer assigns each new character an age relative to the ones already written, and the whole group drifts toward one decade.
Take each result off the list as you go if you want everyone a different age. Six characters spun from 31 entries with removal produces a genuinely spread cast; six spun without it will repeat about 40 percent of the time.
For a wider range or a different band, the Age Spinner Random Picker covers 1 to 70, and the Age Wheel returns life stages rather than numbers. The Aa, Rennen decides what a character is before you decide how old.
