The most useful part happens before it stops

Watch your own reaction while the wheel is turning. The Danish poet and designer Piet Hein made the point decades ago in a short verse about coin flipping: the value is not the result but the moment mid-air when you notice which side you are quietly hoping for.

That reaction is information you cannot reach by thinking. Deliberation produces reasons, and reasons are easy to generate on both sides, leaving a genuine fifty-fifty exactly where it started. Preference shows up involuntarily when an answer is about to be imposed. If the wheel lands on B and you feel relief, you wanted B. If you feel a small drop, you wanted A, and now you know something you did not know a second earlier.

Should you replace A and B with the real options?

Both approaches work and they do different jobs. Typing the actual choices in makes the result concrete, so the landing reads as an answer rather than a letter you then have to translate.

Leaving the labels abstract has its own use. Assigning meaning before you spin, deciding out loud that A is the new job and B is staying put, is itself a small commitment, and once assigned it is harder to quietly swap them when the result arrives. Abstract labels also keep a private decision private on a shared screen or a stream, where a wheel reading "quit" and "stay" tells everyone watching more than you intended.

Does randomizing a real decision actually work?

There is one good experiment on this, and its answer is more interesting than the question deserves. The economist Steven Levitt ran a field study through his own website, inviting people genuinely stuck on a decision to let a virtual coin settle it, and collected more than 20,000 flips.

Heads meant make the change, tails meant stay. Nobody was bound by it. Even so, people who got heads were around 25 percent more likely to actually make the change, and for the weightier decisions, quitting a job or ending a relationship, those told to change reported being happier six months later than those told to stay. Levitt's reading was that people are too cautious about changing their lives.

Two honest caveats. Participants found the study through a popular economics podcast, so they were not a random slice of the population, and the happiness measures were self-reported. It is one strong result rather than a settled fact.

When the A or B Wheel is not really 50/50

Weights let you set uneven odds without pretending otherwise. Writing 3, A and 1, B in the entry box gives A three quarters of the circle and B one quarter, and the split is visible on screen rather than living in your head.

The catch is worth naming. If you find yourself reaching for the weights, the decision has already happened, and what you are building is a wheel that agrees with you. That is fine for a low-stakes preference you are happy to honor most of the time. It is not fine as a way of dressing a settled choice as a random one, and the Results tab counting your spins is a quiet check on the same instinct.

Which decisions belong on a wheel?

Reversibility decides this, not importance. A costly choice you can undo is a fine candidate. A cheap choice you cannot undo is not:

For the third row the wheel is a diagnostic rather than a decider. Spin, notice which result you hoped for, then choose deliberately with that information. Nothing obliges you to obey a spin, and its usefulness does not depend on obedience.

For the fourth row, seek proper advice. A wheel is the wrong instrument for anything with consequences you cannot walk back.
