Letter frequency in written English is heavily skewed, and a flat wheel ignores all of it:

E appears around 12 percent of the time and Z around 0.07 percent, making E roughly 170 times more common. On this wheel they are identical.

That imbalance is exactly why a flat spin is useful. A frequency-weighted wheel would hand you E over and over, and the difficulty in any letter exercise lives entirely in the rare ones.

The five letters that break every alphabet game

Q, X, Z, J, and V are where alphabet activities stall, and the reason is structural rather than a matter of vocabulary. English has very few words starting with them, and nearly every Q word is followed by U.

Any A-to-Z activity, whether foods, countries, names, or objects around the house, runs smoothly for about twenty letters and then stops. Planning for that in advance is most of the work, and a flat wheel forces you to confront it rather than saving the hard letters and quietly abandoning the exercise.

Agree the rule before the first spin: hard letters count double, a pass is allowed once, or they come off the list. Deciding after somebody draws X looks like a reaction to that draw.

Handwriting, phonics, and letter recognition

For younger learners the flat distribution is the feature rather than a flaw. Working through an alphabet book in order means the last letters get the least attention, and those are precisely the ones children encounter least in reading.

Random order also breaks the recitation habit. A child who can sing the alphabet has memorised a sequence, not the letters, and asking for a letter out of order is a genuinely different test. Spinning surfaces that gap immediately.

The same applies to letter formation. Some letters are far harder to write than others, and a randomised drill distributes practice evenly instead of concentrating it on whatever comes first.

Using it for challenges and drills

The simplest format is one letter, one answer, under time pressure. Spin a letter and name a country, an animal, or a word in a category agreed beforehand.
